NVH Testing vs Acoustic Testing: What's the Difference?

NVH and acoustic testing are often confused. Here's how they differ, when you need each, and what equipment to look for when booking.

NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) testing and acoustic testing are related disciplines that are frequently conflated in procurement conversations. They use overlapping equipment but serve different validation objectives.

NVH Testing NVH testing measures the combined perception of noise, vibration, and harshness in a vehicle system. It is typically conducted on a chassis dynamometer, 4-poster road simulator, or dedicated NVH facility. The goal is to characterise and reduce objectionable sensations transmitted to occupants.

Key equipment: 4-poster road simulators, chassis dynos, anechoic hemi-chambers, vibration tables.

Acoustic Testing Acoustic testing specifically measures sound pressure levels, sound power, and transmission loss. It is conducted in anechoic chambers or semi-anechoic chambers to isolate the device under test from external noise. Common for component-level validation (motors, gearboxes, HVAC units).

Key equipment: Anechoic chambers, semi-anechoic chambers, reverberant rooms, sound intensity probes.

When you need both Vehicle-level homologation programmes typically require both. NVH testing validates the integrated system subjectively; acoustic testing provides the objective pass/fail data against regulatory limits (e.g., UN ECE R51, EU exterior noise regulations).

On RIGS & Roads, you can search for NVH facilities and acoustic chambers separately — filtering by frequency range, background noise floor, and chamber volume to match your validation requirement.
